ho ho ho

I finished knitting the baby's Christmas stocking tonight. I think it came out rather well. I had to do the toe twice, and I'm still not 100% happy with my grafting, but it's pretty cute, and will hold lots and lots of stuff.

I'll embroider his name and 2006 on the blank part after he's born.

The pattern is by Annie's Woolens, and the yarn is Creative Focus by Nashua. It's a very nice wool/alpaca blend. Which means it sheds little bits of alpaca. Shedding yarn + knitting while wearing a small camisole + anti-itch cream for my stupid heat rash = hairy goat-chest. I tried to get a photo but the alpaca hair didn't show up. You'll just have to take my word for it. It was quite impressive.

The Dread Pirate Nathan

Avast me mobile yo ho!

My alterations worked and the pirate sweater now goes over his head. I think he looks pretty darn cute in it. By the way, the pattern is from Adorable Knits for Tots. The only thing I changed was the striping on the sleeves; the stripes are four rows instead of eight.

Not included in this photo: my favorite Nathan toy, which is a stuffed 747 airplane. I like it because one can add all sorts of commentary.

"This is the captain speaking. If you look out the left side of the plane, you will see a giant baby."

"I'm telling you, there was something on the wing! And it was drooling! You have to land this plane!"

"Oh, he's just looking for the snakes."

Dennis fall down go boom

Dennis isn't moving too well today. He had a bad fall last night at a concert; it was at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, which is made of concrete. Concrete hurts. He mis-judged a step and went down hard. Fortunately, RockMed was there and a doctor checked him out. His ankle is sprained, and he's in a lot of pain today from all the places that hit the concrete, but he's going to be fine. RockMed saved him a trip to the emergency room (yes, I made a donation this morning) and he was able to drive home, since his left foot is the bad one. Poor thing.

He had originally planned to wear the gold Elvis suit I made him last year, but decided not to because of the heat. I reminded him of that last night, and he agreed that it would have made the whole experience that much weirder, especially being taken out of the concert in a wheelchair. We then wondered if he would have been the first Elvis wheeled out of a Flaming Lips show. I'm guessing maybe not.

habitat

I'm finding that it helps to just think of my body as a Habitat for Humanity construction site. Apparently the baby is renovating my lower ribs this week.

The big thing going on here is that St. Ned's is apparently pretty close to announcing who NextRev is. We've been rector-less since January when TheRev left, so it's very cool that we're about to get a new one.

I'm hoping it will help shake me out of the giant case of the Fuckits I've had lately. Which, granted, is probably more about my physical, uh, challenges and getting ready to move and the fact that my life is going to look just a wee bit different come December than about my job. But, still, change is interesting at least, and I have some new video projects to work on, so that's fun.

Two of my friends were ordained at St. Ned's last month, and I served (badly, as it turns out, but that's another matter) as the bishop's assistant at their request. Vestments on a pregnant chick on the hottest day in June equals No Fun, but I did not pass out. It was kind of a weird day for me, in that I kept checking in with myself to see if being at other people's ordination bothered me at all. I guess I was looking for that feeling of being a bridesmaid when you've just gotten dumped by your boyfriend, but I didn't find it. I am, at least at this moment, free of the urge to pursue ordination.

I don't know if this a permanent case of God letting me off the hook, or if he's going to get back to me at some point in the future, but for now, it's off my plate. I'm all too aware that the last time I was a recently-dumped bridesmaid was at Ryan's wedding, during a bad patch in the Sara and Dennis Show, and now...well...I guess that all worked out in the end. So it's probably best to be open and not think I have any clue how things are going to turn out.

yarn, babies, boobs.

Hey, long time no blog. Since I don't have anything actually interesting going on, I'm just going to offer up photos of past knitting projects in action. Here's the monster sweater and the mst3k sweater on favorite baby Nathan, who is now almost four months old and just a big ol' charmer:

I recently finished a pirate sweater for him, but it had to go back in for revisions because someone, most likely me, bound off the neck ribbing too tightly and it wouldn't go over his head. Ooops. But I fixed it and I'll have a photo of him in it soon. The sweater took two months to complete, since I would knit about three rows and then be exhausted.

I didn't get to play with Nathan this week because Dennis came back from the High Sierra Music Festival on Sunday with a raging head cold (hippie cooties!) and we didn't want to risk getting the baby sick. I'm kind of flirting with coming down with it now, but haven't made a real commitment either way. I seem to be stalled out at headache and vague achiness, and that could be anything, including just another side effect of baby-in-tummy disease.

I hung out with the baby on Saturday, which was fun because we took him for a giant walk, me and Ryan and Jon and Leigh all surrounding the stroller like his Secret Service detail. I thought we should all put a hand on the stroller and run alongside it like the presidential limo, but it was hot and no one wanted to do that. Nathan was happy to just lie back and drool on his little sheep. Meanwhile, I learned a very important lesson about sunscreen (i.e., just thinking about putting some on doesn't actually protect you) and ended up with bright red cleavage.
